After our story this week about who’s eligible for South African citizenship by naturalisation, now we want to explain how you can apply. Of course, based on your background, immigration can be a tricky topic. But we’ll try help you as best we can. Here’s how you apply for South African citizenship by naturalisation.
Using the South African Citizenship Amendment Act 2010 (which came into operation on 1 January 2013) the Western Cape Government website explains the two-step process.
First, an application for Determination of Citizenship must be submitted to the DHA. This is known as a DHA/BI-529 and it is vital to your South African citizenship application.

All supporting documents and copies must be attached for easy reference. Offices and embassies will ensure stamps and sign-offs are added to each application page submitted.
With your Determination of Citizenship completed, you must submit the following documents (with copies) to the DHA.
