Combining AR and VR

The device combines virtual and augmented reality — an experience that Apple calls spatial computing. It’s designed for more immersive FaceTime chats, gaming, video and productivity apps.

The Vision Pro, first unveiled in June, marks the first new hardware category for Apple since the company introduced its smartwatch in 2015.

Apple’s entry into the spatial computing era

Apple’s latest product places it in direct competition with Meta Platforms Inc. and other manufacturers of augmented and virtual reality headsets.

Although Apple’s device comes at a higher price point compared to rival models, it boasts premium features such as dual 4K displays and Mac-grade processors.

Initial reports indicated a February launch for the device. Apple is encouraging users to purchase the product from its retail stores since it requires a precise fitting for proper operation. Additionally, the company announced charges of $99 (R1850) and $150 (R2800) for prescription lens inserts.

This week, the company is hosting hundreds of retail store employees at its headquarters to train them on how to use and sell the device.
