Another fire in Johannesburg has claimed the lives of two children

Two children died and their mother was injured when an informal settlement in Fleurhof, Johannesburg, caught fire this morning.
Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the emergency services in Johannesburg, says it is clear that there is still a great need and space to expand programs to educate people, especially those who live in shacks, on how to avoid fires that end up taking lives.

What caused the fire that claimed the children lives?
Mulaudzi said this while presenting a report on the recent incident that claimed the lives of two children aged two and five years old, and 44 shacks were destroyed.
“Emergency services were called to the scene at around two o’clock in the morning with reports of burning shacks. The first report we received from this place said that a candle that had been lit carelessly was suspected as the cause of the fire,” he said.

This is happening while – it is reported that the number of people who died in the fire of a building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg has increased to 77. This follows news that a 77 year old person has died in hospital.
Motalatale Modiba, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, says that 88 people were admitted to hospital after being rescued by paramedics, but now 31 remain as the others have been released.

“Apart from the number of people in the hospital, there are 74 dead bodies that are still being examined in the morgue. “There are 44 families who came to the Diepkloof mortuary to check on their relatives, and 9 bodies were confirmed,” said Modiba.
He says the biggest problem they are facing at the department is that many people have been burned to death, which makes it difficult to examine the bodies. He says that for others, the DNA of family members will be used to reveal the relationship and who the bodies belong to.
