President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed struggle stalwart Andrew Mlangeni for his contribution to South Africa’s liberation, during the activist’s birthday celebration on Saturday.

Mlangeni was imprisoned for 26 years at Robben Island, along with the late Nelson Mandela in what was intended to be a life sentence.

He is the last surviving Rivonia trialist, following Denis Goldberg’s passing last month.

He turned 95 on Saturday, with Ramaphosa one of the main speakers in a lowkey celebration held virtually and broadcast live via numerous online platforms.

“Today is indeed a celebration and also a triumph,” Ramaphosa said, adding that only a few get to reach Mlangeni’s age.

The birthday celebration was attended by two former South African presidents in Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe.

The incumbent remarked at Mlangeni’s exuberance, despite his advanced age.

“Bab’uMlangeni, all of us who are participating in this celebration wish that we could be like you one day and grow up. As I’m looking at you, I say when I grow up, I do want to be like you and grow up to 95 and still be as healthy as you are, as sharp of mind as you are and, as a fellow golfer, still be able to hit the ball as straight as you do, always on the fairway, and be able to enjoy a beautiful walk.”

An incalculable contibution

He issued out a thanks on behalf of South Africa on the role played by Mlangeni on the country’s liberation.

“We give thanks to your health and wellbeing and remain immensely grateful for the incalculable contribution that you have made to this country and its people. We will never be able to be in a position to thank you enough for the sacrifices that you have made. It is said that virtue is its only reward.

“Today we pay tribute to a man whose life has been rich, rewarding, but not with title or position, and fulfilling but never blighted by arrogance or conceit.”

Ramaphosa said it was sad that one of Mlangeni’s fellow Rivonia trialists in Goldberg could not have a seat reserved at this celebration.
