ANC Veterans Deputy President resigns over ‘corruption’

ANC Veterans League Deputy President Dr. Mavuso Msimang resigns, citing corruption and the ANC’s failure to address issues promptly as reason.

ANC Veterans League Deputy President Dr. Mavuso Msimang resigns, citing endemic corruption and the ANC’s failure to address issues promptly.

Msimang, an Umkhonto we Sizwe veteran, served in Tanzania in 1960, becoming Chief of Communications in 1967, according to SABC News.

He criticizes the ANC’s factional politics, advocating for leaders accused of criminality not to hold office post-2024 elections.

Despite speaking out against corruption for over a decade, Msimang feels unheard, prompting his departure from the ANC.

In his resignation letter to Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, Msimang highlights concerns about the stagnant economy, Eskom, Transnet, and corruption.

“The litany of economic and social woes—crime, unemployment, and destitution—associated with my beloved ANC is not only embarrassing but also defies enumeration.

“It is a matter of public record that for over a decade I have added my voice to many others who have consistently decried and disapproved of corruption and its harmful by-products of nepotism and incompetence.

Msimang asserts ANC’s failures, expressing disappointment in the post-Zuma era leadership, according to The Citizen.

Mbalula’s response to the statements made

Mbalula, urged veterans to cease attacks on the ANC, emphasizing ongoing party renewal efforts and integrity commission actions.

Mbalula defends the ANC, stating that issues are on the agenda, and disciplinary processes await 89 implicated individuals.

We call on them to work with the structures of the organisation. All of us availed ourselves to the veterans’ counsel and direction, everyone including the president.

“They are attacking and de-campaigning our movement as we face difficulties,” Mbalula said.

Msimang, elected deputy president of the ANC Veterans League in July, departs after over 60 years as an ANC member.

ANC elders, including Msimang, continue airing concerns about the party’s direction and leadership, despite Mbalula’s call for unity.
