Former minister Bathabile Dlamini’s future in the African National Congress (ANC) hangs in the balance as the party is set to announce its decision on her fate on Monday, 28 March 2022.

Dlamini was found guilty of perjury earlier this month when a judge ruled that she lied under oath. This was in relation to her testimony in her capacity as Social Development Minister during an inquiry into the social grants crisis.

Dlamini was blamed for failing to ensure that SASSA was better equipped to take over the handling of social grant payments at the time – when SASSA’s contract with the company Cash Paymaster Services – came to an end.

In September 2018, the highest court in the land found that Dlamini had been negligent in her handling of the crisis and ordered her to pay a portion of the costs of litigation brought by the organisations Black Sash and Freedom Under Law (FUL).

BATHABILE DLAMINI REMAINS IN THE ANC

According to eNCA, the ANC has previously said that no-one convicted of a crime will remain a member – but Bathabile Dlamini was at this weekend’s ANC national executive committee meeting.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says the party’s Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile will lead a media briefing and announce a way forward on the matter.

“There will be a briefing tomorrow [Monday] conducted by the treasurer-general. The TG now overseas the work of the secretary-general owing to the ill health of the DSG. He will be able to outline decisions taken by the meeting on this matter,” Mabe said.

The ANC Women’s League has been struggling under Dlamini’s leadership. Several provinces have been unable to grow their member base. At the same time, the league is fiercely criticised for its lack of action and focussing on factional politics. A report from the Mail & Guardian recently revealed that the ANCWL had R10 million “vanish” from one of its trusts.
