So it turns out eMalahleni’s new mayor didn’t have a change of heart after all, and will still be using municipal funds to buy herself a R1.5 million Lexus.
The DA has slammed mayor Lindiwe Ntshalintshali for going through with the purchase of a luxury vehicle, using municipal funds and not her own.
Ntshalintshali is the ANC’s new eMalahleni mayor who, just a few days after being sworn in, requested the SUV. She had initially decided to do the honourable thing and not go through with the purchase, but here we are.
The ANC’s Mandla Ndlovu had suggested the mayor opt for a more affordable car, but she had her sights set on the Lexus and that’s what she got.
In contrast, Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga and Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip have both made it clear that no expensive vehicles will be bought by their municipalities and both; including Jozi mayor Herman Mashaba, have gone on cost-cutting sprees and redirected funds away from councillors and towards service delivery.
The ANC Youth League slammed Msimanga, the DA’s new Tshwane mayor , for cancelling a BMW contract the previous ANC government had signed, labelling it political grandstanding.
