Family and friends of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela mark the sixth anniversary of her passing with a wreath ceremony at Fourways Memorial Park.

It has been six years since struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela took her last breath. In honour of the late icon, family members and friends are participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Fourways Memorial Park.

Family and friends of struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela are set to mark the anniversary of her passing with a wreath-laying ceremony at Fourways Memorial Park.

Mam’ Winnie, as she was affectionately known, passed away six years ago today at the age of 81 in a Johannesburg hospital.

Madikizela-Mandela was a fearless activist who fiercely opposed the apartheid regime and openly criticised the African National Congress (ANC), the party she remained devoted to throughout her political career.

According to Eyewitness News, the ANC Women’s League stated that as the nation reflects Madikizela-Mandela’s legacy, they remain committed to upholding her vision of a just and equitable society.

The deputy secretary-general of the African National Congress, Nomvula Mokonyane, wrote on X, “Top of the morning we are in Fourways Memorial Park, we are here to commemorate the life and times of our mother Mama Winnie Mandela #SheDidNotDieSheMultiplied #WinnieMandela6thComemoration.”

Honouring Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Through Song on the Anniversary of Her Passing

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is to be honoured in song six years to the day of her passing.

Dubbed Legends Never Die, the musical tribute directed by Clive Mathibe will feature Zöe Modiga, Brenda Mntambo and Langa Mavuso acclaimed poet Napo Masheane, singer Muneyi and Morena The Squire.

According to The Citizen, in the spirit of Madikizela-Mandela, the concert will have a sanitary pad collection drive meant to give relief to young women in need across Gauteng and the country.

The #IamWinnieMandela concert is set for 2 April at the iconic Market Theatre.

The series debuts by honouring Madikizela-Mandela in its first episode.

The show was brought about by a partnership between the City of Joburg’s Department of Community Development and the Market Theatre.
