A 25-year-old woman was arrested for concealment of birth in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, 26 July.

COMMUNITY REPORTS SUSPECT

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the incident occurred in Amaoti at approximately 14:00.

Community members allegedly apprehended the woman as they suspected that she had killed her baby.

“On arrival at the scene, police established that the community had forced the woman to dig up the shallow grave where the remains of her baby were buried,” said Ngcobo.

The woman was arrested and charged with concealment of birth at Inanda police station. The newborn baby’s remains were transported to a local mortuary.

According to the police, it is alleged that the woman was pregnant and when she was spotted without a baby the community became suspicious and interrogated her. She reportedly told neighbours that the child had died.

The woman is expected to appear before the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 28 July, on the aforementioned charge.
