An advocate, was taken into custody on 8 September 2023 by the Bellville-based Serious Corruption Investigation team for corruption.

Phuti Given Mothemane, 35, an advocate, was taken into custody on 8 September 2023 by the Bellville-based Serious Corruption Investigation team.

What did the Advocate do?

On 23 September 2022, according to allegations, Advocate Mothemane approached a member of the National Prosecuting Authority and demanded R50,000.00 (fifty thousand rands) in exchange for filing arguments on behalf of his client or erasing the State’s case.

The Serious Corruption Investigation team issued an arrest warrant, which was then carried out, leading to the arrest.

On 8 September 2023, the accused made their initial court appearance in Bellville. His next court appearance in the Regional Court is scheduled for 9 October 2023, and he is now free on R500 bail.

What did the provincial Head of the Hawks in the Western Cape say?

Major General Makgato, the Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Western Cape, has praised the team’s arrest.

“No one is above the law and DPCI will keep rooting out any criminal elements in our community,” said General Makgato.

Similar case

Teffo, who is renowned for his controversial contribution as a defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, was arrested on Tuesday, 1 August 2023. He had been under police custody, awaiting his court appearance where he was charged.

Following this revelation, it is understood that the magistrate has since ordered him to cooperate with the state by providing the required information as requested.

The 53 year old disbarred advocate appeared in court for two dockets that each cite their own charges, including theft, malicious damage to property and fraud.
