ActionSA and the Democratic Alliance (DA) said they would hunt for councillors who ‘betrayed’ them by backing ANC-EFF in the Tshwane mayoral vote.

This comes after Dr. Murunwa Makwarela from the Congress of the People (COPE) was elected as the new Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane on Tuesday evening, 28 February 2023.

According to The Citizen, Brink received 101 out of 213 votes, while Makwarela managed to secure 112 of the votes cast.

The voting took place via secret ballot.

“The multi-party coalition has held a majority since taking office in 2021 and continues to hold a majority of seats in council. As has become standard with the ANC and EFF, it is clear that some councillors from within the coalition were induced to break ties with the coalition and support Makwarela.

“All parties within the coalition will work to identify those who sold out the residents of Tshwane and the coalition. These councillors will be removed and replaced with urgency ahead of a motion of no confidence that will be tabled to remove Makwarela from his ill-gotten office,” said ActionSA in a statement.

The DA said it will make the ANC-EFF coalition of chaos and corruption regret its shameless politicking to achieve through the backdoor what voters have denied them at the ballot box.

“Parties in the Tshwane City Council today showed their true colours. The DA voted for Cilliers Brink to lead the Multi-Party Coalition in government. This was a vote for service delivery to residents, clean governance, and fiscal prudence. Unfortunately, other political parties put self-interest, patronage, and political opportunism above the people of Tshwane,” reads the DA statement.

The South African previously reported that Tshwane has been without a mayor since 13 February 2023, when former mayor Randall William resigned.
