ActionSA calls for Free State MEC to step down

ActionSA in the Free State has called for the removal of MEC Motshidisi Koloi from office pending her criminal case.

Koloi appeared before the Kroonstad Magistrates Court on Friday and faces charges of alleged fraud, money laundering amd contravention of the Municipal Management Act.

The MEC appeared in court alongside Department of Human Settlements Chief Director Vusimuzi Rajuili and political advisor to the Matjhabeng Municipality, Serake Leeuw.

The charges relate to the purchasing of a sound system for a Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture. The trio are accused of using municipal funds (R150 000) from the Moqhaka Municipality despite the event not taking place.

According to OFM, at the time of the alleged incident in 2017, Koloi was mayor, while, Rajuili was the service provider and Leeuw, a manager at Koloi’s office.

“The scale of corruption in our country has cost us dearly, without pervasive corruption allowing out our state institutions, South Africa’s development would have been at a significantly more advanced stage”, says ActionSA provincial chairperson, Patricia Kopane.

“This is the reason why corruption should be treated as public enemy number one and South Africa must have a zero tolerance approach to any and all corruption.”
