The African National Congress (ANC) has released a statement after it was made aware that there is an arrest warrant out for its Secretary-General Ace Magashule.

The Hawks confirmed on Tuesday 10 November that an arrest warrant was issued with regards to the infamous Asbestos corruption case.

The ruling party started off by saying that it was made aware of the warrant through media reports on Tuesday.

“Today, Tuesday 10 November 2020, the African National Congress (ANC) learned through media reports of the issuance of a warrant of arrest against its Secretary-General Comrade Ace Magashule,” it said.

“This afternoon, Secretary-General advised the movement that he will be in consultation with his legal team to best respond to the latest developments and to guide any response on the matter. The Secretary-General previously spoke about his imminent arrest and had requested his legal team to establish the validity of such an arrest with the relevant authorities,” said ANC National Spokesperson Pule Mabe.

“The Secretary-General stated on more than one occasion, including through his legal team, that he would cooperate with any process undertaken by law enforcement agencies,” added Mabe.

The ANC said it would be monitoring developments closely and will accordingly communicate on any update should the need arise.

Enca’s Political Editor Vuyo Mvoko interviewed Magashule shortly after the news broke on Tuesday. When asked if he was aware of the arrest warrant, Magashule answered “no”.

“If it happens, it will happen, I’m not worried at all because I know I haven’t done anything wrong as a law-abiding citizen of South Africa,” he said.

Member of the Official Opposition in the Free State Legislature Leona Kleynhans released a statement on Tuesday saying;

“I have just confirmed that an arrest warrant was issued this morning for the current Secretary-General of the ANC and former Premier of the Free State, Ace Magashule. This is in relation to the illegal Free State asbestos housing contracts in which the Department of Human Settlements was used as a vehicle to launder R255 million from government into the pockets of various cronies,” said Kleynhans.

“The tragedy of the destruction of the Free State and the plundering of state coffers by Mr Magashule will hopefully now be brought to an end as the wheels of justice turn against him,” added Kleynhans.
