A small act of kindness changes a man’s entire perspective

Riaan Dohne didn’t realise when he let Brian Dlamini train at his gym for free, that both men’s lives would be changed for good.

A small act of kindness change

Around a year ago, Brian walked past the gym that Riaan owns and saw some people training. Brian joined the class, without realizing that the class was for members only.

Riaan admired Brian’s enthusiasm and when he spoke to Brian after the class, he decided to give him a free membership. He has not missed a class since.

When Brian asked, not too long ago, if he could use some old roof panels that were stored in the back of the gym, Riaan was more than happy to give them away and he offered to transport them to where Brian needed to go.

The men arrived at Chesterville Squatter Camp, to an area without actual roads. “We made a few trips as there was quite a lot to carry which was quite unexpected after a hectic workout,” Riaan quips.

When they arrived at Brian’s house, Brian wanted to introduce Riaan to his mother, and upon meeting her, Brian said, “This is Riaan, Mom, the man who’s been letting me train and keep fit at his gym; the man I prayed for God to put in our lives.”

At that moment, Riaan’s entire perspective changed. “This isn’t all just simply about a guy that gyms with me. Everything I now saw in a different light as I put myself in his shoes, living like he does in those circumstances.”

Brian explained to Riaan that he needed the roof panels for the holes in his tin roof as it gets cold and wet in his house when it rains. Brian then showed Riaan his CV, which he keeps safe in a plastic sleeve in a shoe box under his couch.

CV Brian

After chatting a bit more, Riaan established that Brian is working at a construction company but being taken advantage of, as he receives very little or no pay, with what Riaan knows will be a false job offer at the end of six months’ work.

“So, I am asking for help,” pleads Riaan on social media. “This man is so genuine and loyal and hard-working. Just reflecting on all of this shows what an amazing character and attitude he has and that he just needs an opportunity.”

Despite the fact that Brian has no formal income, he is responsible for looking after his mother, and has never asked Riaan for help, or complained in any way.

Riaan is asking that if anyone in the Durban area is able to help Brian find employment, that you contact him here or phone 0836451609.
