5 tips to keep your pets safe and sound during firework season

Firework season is among us and pet owners may not know what to do – here are five tips to ensure your fur babies are safe.

Pets are not accustomed to the loud bangs that come with fireworks. Many pet owners do not know what to do during firework season to keep their fur friends safe.

Here are five helpful ways to ensure your fur babies feel loved and are safe this firework season.

“The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has witnessed over the past few years, that the effects of Guy Fawkes continue for weeks following the firework use, as many animals become so distressed at the level of noise, that they flee in panic in an attempt to reach a place of safety,”

says the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Make sure your windows, curtains/blinds are CLOSED

PETA recommends closing your windows as frightened dogs sometimes attempt to jump through open windows. The organisation suggests turning on an air conditioner, fan, or dehumidifier to drown out the sound of fireworks.

Play music specially designed to calm your pets

PETA suggests playing classical music or music that is specifically designed to calm dogs. The non-profit organisation provided suggestions for music that help dogs. 

Some options include Through a Dog’s Ear or the YouTube Channel Relax My Dog.

Use items to distract your dogs to keep them calm

According to The Conversation food, traits and or toys are a great way to distract your frightened pet. The distraction could also build ‘positive associations’ to fireworks.

Scented toys assist with calming your dog as using their noses can make them more optimistic.

Your pets should be indoors after dark

Pets tend to go missing every year as they are scared by fireworks. To keep them safe, ensure that they are indoors after dark when fireworks are being used.

Checking your garden, gates and fencing is also important to make sure your pets don’t run away. Ensuring that their microchip details are up to date is crucial just in case your pet does run away.

Consider giving your pets medication – if necessary

PETA recommends using Melatonin which is a naturally occurring hormone. Remember to consult your vet before giving your dog any medication.

The dosage of Melatonin adjusts with the body weight of your dog. While medication does help in calming your dog, it’s also important to show them love and give them a safe space.
