About 2 000 Khayelitsha shack dwellers were adversely affected following a night of heavy rains, the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Mandy Thomas said 483 homes had been flooded in S-Section, leaving scores in discomfort.

There was, however, no need for evacuation or emergency shelter,” she said.

NGOs had visited the informal settlements to feed those affected, Thomas confirmed.

An additional 90 homes were flooded in the Strand settlements of Task Team and Pholile B.

The City’s housing department would distribute plastic sheeting to assist those affected, she said.

On Wednesday, the SA Weather Service forecast 30% rain for the province, Thomas added, and officials remained on standby as assessments continued.
