37K TAKEN during Transport Minister’s Highway robbery

One of Transport Minister’s bodyguards may be regretting carrying a large sum of money after being robbed on the highway.

Two weeks ago Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, was a victim of a robbery along the N3, and it seems the robbers may have gotten away with much more than just cellphones, laptops and a bag.

ROBBERS BIG FIND

According to the Sunday Times, one of Chikunga’s bodyguards was robbed of R37 000 that had been intended for the repairs of his roof.

The minister was en route to Pretoria, between N3 Vosloorus and Heidelberg, where they became victims of spiking.

The bodyguards who are members of the South African Police Service VIP Protection Unit, were busy changing the punctured tyre and returning items to the car when they were ambushed.

GUARDS RELIEVED OF DUTIES

Chikunga at the time reported being traumatised by the incident as she believed she was going to be killed after one of the robbers pointed a gun at her head.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Matha also confirmed the guards were robbed of their guns.

A case of armed robbery has been opened while the police are on the manhunt for the assailants.

The guards were also relieved of their duties while they received the necessary counselling. Meanwhile, the minister is temporarily guarded by a replacement unit, until her guards are fit for duty again.
