15 000 more jobs lost in first quarter of 2016

Statistics South Africa’s newest Quarterly Employment Survey shows that the country shed 15 000 jobs in the first three months of the year.

The drop in employment equates to about 0.2% added to overall unemployment, with a total of 9.2 million people currently jobless in SA.

Fin24 reports that the survey looks at the mining industry; manufacturing, electricity and gas, construction, retail, business and community and personal services sector, using data captured to measure the levels of employment.

The retail and hospitality sectors shed the most jobs across the board.
