Toyota Vitz: This is how much the carmaker’s cheapest car costs in SA

More affordable cars are needed. The economy is in tatters and there is need from cars who focus on getting their passengers from ‘a to b’.The new Toyota Vitz fits into this space.

The Japanese carmaker has once again used its alliance with Suzuki to delve into their impressive line-up and turn a Celerio into the Vitz.

THE TOYOTA VITZ IS AVAILABLE IN THREE DERIVATIVES: MT, XR MT AND XR AMT

The small small car market, consisting of the A, Sub-B and B segments now accounts for 64% (versus 53% in 2018) of the total passenger market, according to Toyota.

Let’s get to the nitty gritty, the Vitz uses the same sprightly 1.0-litre petrol engine with 49kW and 89Nm which is sent to the front wheels via the choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or an automated manual transmission (AMT), according to IOL.

I’ve driven the Vitz’s Suzuki cousin and can attest to the engine performance being admirable, this is mostly down to its low kerb weight.

The claimed fuel consumption figure was not published by Houdini and is 4.4-litre per 100km for the manual while the AMT model is 4.2-litre per 100km.

SO WHAT ARE THE VITZ’S STANDARD FEATURES?

From a practical point of view, the Vitz has luggage capacity of 295 litres and the rear seats have a 60/40 split. Standard features on the XR models include: central locking via the key fob, air conditioning, steering wheel controls for telephone and audio functions.

Other items available are electrical-powered mirrors and windows and a four-speaker sound system, touchscreen infotainment system featuring Bluetooth and USB functionality. From a smartphone infotainment point of view Apple Carplay and Android Auto is also available.

Peace of mind for prospective Toyota Vitz owners comes in the form of a two-year or 30 000 km Service Plan and a three-year or 100 000 km warranty is also provided. Service intervals are pegged at 12 months or 15 000 km.
