New Volkswagen ID.7: Flagship EV with 700km range debuts in Shanghai

The new Volkswagen ID.7 made its debut at the Shanghai motor show and the carmaker says it flagship electric car has a range of up to 700km.

This is a first look at the production version of the the new Volkswagen ID.7. It was unveiled at the Shanghai motor show and will become the brand’s flagship electric car.

It’s always exciting when Volkswagen launches a new car, except this isn’t the new Golf GTI but rather a spacious luxury electric sportback with lots of interior space.

THE NEW VOLKSWAGEN ID.7 IS ONE OF THEN NEW ELECTRIC MODELS THAT WILL BE LAUNCHED BY 2026

Customers in Europe and China are scheduled to see the model launch in autumn this year with the North American region launch to follow in 2024, according to Car and Driver.

Volkswagen South Africa is yet to release details on whether the ID.7 will be available locally. It currently has no full-electric model on sale.

This is a luxury car so expect massage seats, an electrically dimmable panoramic roof, the front pews can be heated and cooled and they even have a drying function.

With all the interior space Volkswagen has seen it fit to offer customers an optional 700-watt sound system from Harman Kardon with 14 high-end loudspeakers, including centre speaker at the front and subwoofer in the luggage compartment.

Depending on the battery size, the new Volkswagen ID.7 has a range of up to 700km and produce 200kW of power. The German brand says this makes it the most powerful Volkswagen yet, according to Volkswagen Newsroom.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said: “With the ID.7 we are taking the next step in our electric offensive. The limousine offers a high level of comfort and long ranges. As from 2033, Volkswagen will produce only electric vehicles in Europe.”
