New AARTO laws are targeting speeding violations. Here’s how …

Here’s a list of all AARTO speeding violations and the demerit points you’ll earn. So take it easy on the accelerator pedal.

In line with new, stricter AARTO laws being cleared by the Constitutional Court, South Africa’s Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) has bolstered its speeding violations.

The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) acts as the administrator of the South African National Road Traffic Act. On top of speeding violations, there is the points demerit system on motorists’ licenses.

The new AARTO act, including the demerit system, comes into effect on 1 July 2024. That might seem a long time from now. Nevertheless, you should still be aware of how many demerit points you accrue with your speeding violations.

Motorists may only receive 15 demerit points on their license before suspension. You can be suspended twice before your driving license is taken away. Besides speeding, there are currently 2 659 offences listed on the AARTO website, including their fines and associated demerit points. You can find a full list of them HERE.

CAN I CHECK MY SPEEDING VIOLATIONS?

If you want to check the status of your speeding violations or other infringement notices issued against you, visit the aarto.gov.za website:

  • Click on “query my fine”.
  • Provide your ID number and driving license number.
  • Juristic entities can provide their business register number and the ID number of a proxy.

AARTO says you should make use of this free facility, as many South Africans don’t know of the AARTO violations recorded against their particulars.

Breaking the speeding violations down, these are the speeds will land you in court:

  • 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
  • 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
  • 140 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
  • 160 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.
