Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz managed to hold off Lando Norris and the fast-charging Mercedes pair to take a sensational Singapore Grand Prix victory on Sunday.

The race, which fans considered the best race of the season, saw four cars battling out for the lead for 20 laps.

In the end, Sainz worked in synch with Norris to deny the Mercs boys a 1-2 finish in Singapore.

Carlos Sainz converted pole position into a second career victory to become the first non-Red Bull driver to win a race this season.

For a second, it looked like it would be a Ferrari 1-2 with Charles Leclerc keeping George Russell in check but a Safety Car was deployed after Logan Sargeant crashed into the barrier.

Leclerc lost a few places but Sainz was well in front holding off Russell, who seemed to be faster. With less than 20 laps to go, Esteban Ocon – running in sixth at the time – stopped on track with a suspected gearbox issue.

Mercedes used the Virtual Safety Car to stop their drivers for some new medium tyres, setting up a grandstand finish at the Singapore GP.

Both Russell and Hamilton easily went past Leclerc but struggled to ovetake both Sainz and Norris in the final 5 laps. The Spaniard gifted his former McLaren team mate some DRS in the closing stages to hold of Russell who then crashed into in the final lap.

Singapore podium sees Norris and Sainz reunite.
