Red Bull team boss Christian Horner believes his driver Sergio Perez will come back stronger next year despite a lacklustre season.

Despite finishing second in the F1 drivers championship, the 33-year-old had a lackluster season only managing two wins from 22 races. His teammate Max Verstappen was unstoppable in the RB19 car, winning 19 races and going on to break multiple records.

Perez, who is known as Checo by fans, started the season well, winning two of the four races but faded away as the season went by and has never looked like challenging Verstappen.

The Mexican however did question the upgrades Red Bull made after the fifth round.

Speaking to Sky Sports at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Horner commented that while he has been pleased with Perez’s race-day efforts, his driver often made life more difficult for himself with sub-par qualifying performances.

“I think the last few races he’s had a bit of a reset,” Horner said about Perez.

“His pace, when you look at the analysis through [the Abu Dhabi] weekend, again was very, very strong. He’s just got to sort his Saturdays out,” he said.

Horner said Perez needed time to reset and should be up for the challenge next year.

“He knows it’s a big year for him and he’ll take a bit of time this winter to reflect on where he needs to improve and I’m sure he’ll come back fighting next year.”
