Alonso claims he should have won a race last season

Despite a good season with Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso has not won a Formula One race since 2013 but has come close this year.

Fernando Alonso believes he should have won a race after a very successful year at Aston Martin this past season.

The 42-year-old Formula One two-time champion had a shot at winning both the Monaco and Dutch Grands Prix in the season gone by.

Alonso joined Aston Martin from Alpine over the winter and his move coincided with a leap up the pecking order from the Silverstone outfit, whose AMR23 emerged as second-best to Red Bull in the year’s early races.

The veteran driver believes it was possible for him to win a race this year.

“I think it was possible.

“Probably Monaco was the closest, with a tyre call change or something. Maybe Zandvoort if we were in a different position in that restart or something,” said Alonso.

“We probably had opportunities [to win] here and there, and yes, I believe that we deserve it more than anyone else this year.”

Alonso finished fourth in the drivers championship and it was for the first time in 10 years that the Spaniard finished top four at the end of the season.

For next year, Alonso believes the Aston Martin car should focus on straight line speed.

“Also, if we can improve the straight-line speed… I think that was, in performance numbers, our weak point, always [being] a little bit too slow on the straights.”
