Mercedes-AMG enthusiasts let out a groan an audible loud that rivalled the departing V8 engine’s cold start bark when it was axed in 2022.

The M177 4.0-litre V8 engine’s replacement was a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine coupled with hybrid power in the C-Class.

The next-generation E-Class performance derivative will substitutes its V8 powerplant for a lower capacity V6 engine and an electric motor.

MERCEDES-AMG FACED CRITICISM OVER DECISION TO DROP THE MUCH-LAUDED V8

However, a report by veteran motoring journalist Georg Kacher in Car and Driver revealed that Mercedes-AMG is considering reintroducing the V8 to its flagship C-Class and E-Class models pairing them with hybrid power.

The report says the V8-powered C63 and E63 models could step into the limelight in 2026 and that the power unit is being modified to meet the European Union’s strict emissions criteria.

Fitting the V8 engine to the models doesn’t require major modifications to the bodywork, the report says.
