How to spot a BAD mechanic and save yourself thousands of bucks

Renowned car YouTuber and mechanic for over 50 years Scotty Kilmer runs through three common scams mechanics try and pull on car owners.

Cars are likely the second most expensive purchase we’ll make in our lives. And at some point, we’re likely to come across mechanics during the period of ownership. There’s a bad mechanic and a good mechanic.

Mercifully, there are good guys out there like Scotty Kilmer. The YouTuber has been a mechanic for over 50 years and regularly offers car advice to regular folk.

THE BAD MECHANIC GIVE THE GOOD ONE A BAD NAME

This time around Kilmer focuses on how to spot a scam mechanic or a good mechanic that overcharges clients.

The veteran mechanic’s first tip is to warn people not be overly impressed by a mechanics fancy tools or certificates. He reckons a good mechanic is someone who knows how to use their tools or computers properly. Added to that, they have the knowledge of what to look for and don’t solely rely on the computer.

Another good tip Kilmer has is took look around the mechanic’s shop and take note of parked cars in various states of disrepair. Kilmer says some of them do this to create an impression their business is busy. Alternatively they take a long time to deal with peoples cars.

A final tip Kilmer advises is to never tell a mechanic, good or bad, that they can take their time to fix their car. He says this opens the door to ones car being left aside because it isn’t deemed urgent.
