I love browsing online car classifieds to see what’s on offer. Recently I was contemplating whether a Volkswagen Amarok bakkie would a good choice of vehicle in a fictional two-car garage.

I filtered the list of vehicles by using ‘price high to low’ sorting system and was gob smacked to notice the first Amarok on the list was advertised for R2 099 900. I immediately clicked on the post because it seemed like an error by the dealer who advertised the bakkie.

The high price didn’t make sense when looking back to the end of 2020 Volkswagen South Africa announced that its flagship Highline and Extreme models would command price tags of R921 900 and R996 000, according to IOL.

Their prices would eventually rise to north of a million rand. Both models were powered by Volkswagen Group’s 190kW 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine with 580Nm. It was mated to an eight-speed torque converter gearbox and power was sent to all four wheels.

Back to the R2 million Volkswagen Amarok bakkie on sale at M5 Auto in Gauteng, a closer look at the ad uncovered that its high price tag is linked to the bakkie being fitted with Level B SIX Ballistic Protection.

According to the ad the V6 bakkie can withstand penetration from assault rifles such as an AK47, R1 and R4. Its armoured doors are fitted with 16mm composite panels and the glass is 37mm thick ballistic glass. Even the battery is protected by an 8mm steel box.
