Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts who are conservative with their wild streak will be thrilled with the Stuttgart brand’s latest product announcement, built with the help of AMG.

For those who prefer the silhouette, slightly statelier image and marginally better high-speed stability of a sedan as opposed to a hatchback, there is now a new A35 sedan.

The work of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division, the A35 is a compact sedan featuring all-wheel drive and a potent 2-litre turbocharged engine. Styled with AMG’s latest twin-louvre grille and rolling signature 18-inch alloy wheels, A35 is purposeful without being outlandishly styled – like many other AMGs.

It might have a stealthier appearance than most other AMGs, but there is nothing at all restrained about the A35’s performance credentials. The 2-litre turbomotor is good for outputs of 225kW and 400Nm, which are split between all four wheels via a rapid-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

On a surface with good traction Mercedes claims that the A35 will run 0-100kph in 4.8 seconds, before reaching an electronically limited 250kph top speed. Harmonising the car’s dynamics are adaptive dampers, which offer three stages of adjustment.

Beyond its ability to cover ground extremely swiftly, the A35 offers 420-litres of boot space and a cabin equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s latest widescreen digital instrumentation and voice-activated intelligent infotainment assistance.

Aimed at those customers who are not completely enamoured by the slightly OTT A45 AMGs, the four-door A35 appears to be an excellent blend of style, performance and sophistication. Mercedes-Benz seems to have consolidated all the aforementioned attributes into a compact package which should be easier to place, park and drive on the limit than many larger, and more powerful cars, which aren’t any quicker against the clock.
