The good news we both need and deserve in this country: The Limpopo-based Ndlovu Youth Choir have sailed through to the finals of America’s Got Talent, following their stellar cover of Steve Winwood’s Higher Love. It follows a series of blockbuster performances that have seen the group ascend to stateside fame.

America’s Got Talent finalists

Their blistering performance on Tuesday evening cemented their place in folklore for the long-running talent show, and they’ve gone down as one of the best-loved acts this season. The American public voted in their droves, and the judges have also kept Ndlovu Youth Choir close to their hearts.

Ndlovu Youth Choir make history

The choir auditioned for the 14th season of America’s Got Talent, where Simon Cowell, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union, Howie Mandel, and host Terry Crews follows in their talent search, showcasing unique performers from across the country in the US – and of course, now from South Africa.

The final takes place in two weeks’ time. We’ve seen suggestions that the citizens of Mzansi should treat this event “like it’s a World Cup final”. And honestly, we’re all for it: What these guys have achieved defies belief, and they’re the feel-good story that we so desperately wanted to see this month.

They will be one of five finalists vying for the ultimate prize. Previous performances of Beautiful Day and Waka Waka propelled them to the very top. Now, one more heart-stopping effort could see them crowned winners of the biggest television competition on the airwaves.

Who are the Ndlovu Youth Choir?

The Ndlovu Youth Choir is from a small town in Limpopo and since its inception in 2009, “have profoundly affected the lives of the choristers and demonstrates the potential of any human being to achieve excellence no matter their background, education or place of birth,” reads their official website. “From its humble beginnings as an after-school activity, the choir has evolved into a truly outstanding professional ensemble.”

They reached viral fame earlier in 2019 when their cover of Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You. But they are now establishing themselves as truly unique performers on the international stage, forging a reputation as this generation’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo. We’ll be rooting for the SA Youth Choir on AGT, every step of the way!
