The new Gen Z word for Millennials — “cheugy” — has been trending on social media. Here is what it means, how to use it and how to pronounce it. 

The new term – which gained traction a few weeks ago when the 24-year-old copywriter Hallie Cain’s TikTok explainer went viral – is pronounced “CHEW-gee” and is used to describe “someone who is out of date or trying too hard,” according to the New York Times.

WHAT DOES ‘CHEUGY’ MEAN?

The term used by Gen-Zbasically refers to an entire aesthetic or subculture a.

According to Parade, a “cheug” is:

  • A Millennial (24 to 40 years old);
  • Focuses their identity around certain brands or aesthetics;
  • Tries too hard to be cool or into something;
  • Has outdated style (tassel earrings, skinny jeans and Gucci belts are definite signs of a cheug); and
  • Is super-aware of said outdated style.

In a fashion sense, Cheugy is the opposite of trendy, but it had to have been the height of fashion at some point.

TikTok influencer Rod explained that men can also be cheugy. 

“Men, suck it up. We are basic too,” he said in a TikTok video. He then went on to call Axe body spray, cargo shorts, Buffalo wild wings and a few others the male version of cheugy.
