The South African Social Security Agency provides three SASSA grants for childcare. And knowing which best suits your needs if you have a child in your care depends on a couple of factors, according to the SASSA Check online resource.

The three SASSA grants for children are:
- Child Care Dependency Grant.
- Child Support Grant.
- Foster Child Grant.
SASSA GRANTS FOR CHILDCARE
Firstly, a child refers to anyone under the age of 18, and assistance is given to parents, guardians/custodians and foster parents. So, if you’re any of the above and you have a child in your care, the government can assist you.

The SASSA Care Dependency Grant is a full-time care for kids with permanent or severe disability. This assistance was designed for children with mental or physical disabilities requiring continuous at-home care. It is similar to a SASSA Disability Grant, except for someone younger than 18-years of age. This currently pays R2 090 per month.
CHILD SUPPORT VS. FOSTER CHILD
Aimed at lower-income households to cover the basic needs of children, the SASSA Child Support Grant is seen as a support to other sources of income. You have to be the primary caregiver to a child in the house. This also pays R2 090 per month and you cannot have it and a Foster Child Grant running at the same time.

The SASSA Foster Child Grant in South Africa differs from Child Support in that it is less, R1 130 vs. R2 090 per month, and you need to be a court-appointed foster parent of the child in question in accordance with the South African Child Care Act.
