PARIS PANICS OVER BEDBUGS

Reuters reported on Saturday, 7 October that the French government is battling to contain the nationwide panic over bedbugs in Paris just nine months before the 2024 Olympic Games.

The publication adds that government officials held an emergency meeting on Friday on how to tackle a crisis borne out of anecdote and viral posts on social media.

Jean-Michel Berenger, an entomologist at Marseille’s main hospital and France’s leading expert on les punaises tells the BBC that every late summer they see a big increase in bedbugs.

“That is because people have been moving about over July and August, and they bring them back in their luggage.

“And each year, the seasonal increase is bigger than the last one.”

SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS TO BEDBUGS VIDEO

@AgentOfHydra138: “They showed up in my house a few years ago, I tried sprays, powders, fogging and everything I could find, they kept coming back until I used to pour on ivermectin thinned down with water and sprayed that around, they were gone by the next day. I’ve never felt so grossed out.”

@LliwDroffats: “People not realising the bed bugs were probably brought there by people from other countries who came to Paris fashion week.”

@jesuissamii, said: “Do you guys know how hard it is to get rid of bed bugs? I worked in homelessness. We once paid £70k to get the entire building heated to 80C for a week. We came to the bedbugs enjoying the heat, like they were on a sun lounger and sipping piña coladas.”
