DJ Freedem – also known as the Trap Gardener – is a New York-based plant enthusiast best known for his YouTube gardening videos.

The Trap Gardener hosts online plant workshops with a modern, pop-culture twist that show off his flamboyant personality.

For example, his “plant” stage name is Freedella de’ Vil, a play on Cruella de Ville from 101 Dalmations. He is also is fearless in his videos and the language is blunt, so be warned if you are sensitive to swearing.

The Trap Gardener and music

DJ Freedem is a resident DJ at Half Moon in Brooklyn, New York. He released his album Life after Death in July this year and his music is available on SoundCloud

As the Trap Gardener, however, he is also the founder of “The Underground Plant Trade” digital platform.

This runs off an Instagram page he created where white people give black people plants. The page’s bio reads: “If you’re white, give a black person a plant. #BLM”.

How to align your plants and stars

The Trap Gardener recently put together a guide to plant selection with the inspiration of zodiac signs.

According to Dazed Digital, these are the Trap Gardener’s plant choices for the 12 different signs of the zodiac.

Aquarius (Jan 20 to Feb 18)

Snake plant: Snake plants can take care of themselves but you can kill them by overwatering. Hence the Trap Gardener matched them with Aquarius, who are windblown “the water carriers”, here one minute and gone the next. He describes these as the easiest plants to keep.

Pisces (Feb 19 to March 20)

Spider plant: Pisces tend to be compassionate and big on family, so too are spider plants as they blossom like a family

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

Dragon Tree: He feels that the twisted dragon plant best suits the aggressive and independent personalities often seen in Aries individuals. This plant is slightly toxic as it can kill cats and dogs.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

Money Tree – Taurus are reputedly patient and hard-working and so the Trap Gardener decided to pair Taurus with the plant known as the money tree.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

Monstera Deliciosa: Gemini tends to be flexible, so he paired them with delicious monsters, which are flexible and adaptable plants.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

Nerve plants: These plants require a lot of attention. They are suitable for people who remember to water their plants therefore the green-fingered guru matched them with Cancer. These plants also clear the air, which would be useful during this pandemic.

Leo (July 23 to Aug 22)

Bromeliads: Leo is known for being a bright and fiery star sign so he matched them with the bright-coloured bromeliads.

Choosing plants for personalities

Virgo (Aug 23 to Sept 22)

Rubber plant: He feels Virgo individuals can be nit-pickers so the shiny leaved rubber plants would best suit their perfectionistic nature.

Libra (Sept 23 to Oct 22)

Majesty Palm: Libra appreciates balance so the Trap Gardener paired this star sign with the majesty palm plants which also require a balance of light, water and humidity.

Scorpio (Oct 23 to Nov 21)

Raven ZZ Plant: These plants are said to be tough, dark, hard to find and able to handle neglect due to water stored in their roots. As he says, this is a plant which “refuses to die”, so they should be safe with the can-be-dangerous Scorpio.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 to Dec 21)

Cactus: These plants are drought tolerant and love the dry air outside but, just like Sagittarius, you can get hurt if you get too close.

Capricorn (Dec 22 to Jan 19)

Orchids: The garden whisperer matched sensitive Capricorns with orchids because these plants are sensitive as well. He says they cannot be underwatered, so Capricorns would make the best guardians.

Whether you do your planning in the sun or by the stars, happy gardening!
