South Africa ranks among the world’s 10 most miserable countries

Great weather, good food and friendly people don’t seem to be able to negate the fact that we as South Africans are the 10th most miserable bunch of people on earth.

Well, look on the bright side – if you can –, at least we’re not number one. No, South Africa comes in at 10th on the list, but it still ranks us with some of the hairiest countries worldwide.

The World Misery Index does an annual survey of the most upbeat and the most miserable countries globally by looking at inflation, unemployment, and lending rates. 108 countries are surveyed annually by the Cato Institute, which compiles the final report. Each country is then given a percentage and well, the higher your percentage the more miserable you are.

Venezuela takes the top spot for the most miserable country; the other ten are as follows:

  2. Syria
  3. Ukraine
  4. Iran
  5. Brazil
  6. Sao Tome and Principe
  7. Serbia
  8. Jamaica
  9. South Africa

The 10 most upbeat countries in the world are:

  1. Brunei
  2. Switzerland
  3. China
  4. Taiwan
  5. Japan
  6. South Korea
  7. Norway
  8. Malaysia
  9. Singapore
  10. Germany

Interesting to note that the most upbeat countries are mostly Asian
