If you’re one of the millions living below the poverty line in South Africa, here’s how you can apply for a SASSA SRD grant before 2024 rolls around. Developed as a means of Social Relief of Distress in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, here are six ways to apply for a SASSA SRD grant this December.

Around 8-million people receive Social Relief of Distress grants via the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), and there are six ways to apply if you’re a first-time user wanting to become a beneficiary. Better still, social society is lobbying government for an increase to the R350 stipend in 2024.

1. ONLINE

Firstly, and perhaps the easiest if you have access to the internet is via the SASSA website which you can click HERE. Type in a cellphone number and you will receive an SMS. Simply follow the prompts from there.

2. MOBILE

Next, you can use USSD on your phone by dialing *134*7737#. You will then be prompted to answer a series of questions via text, as explained in the video above. This include confirming your citizenship status, if SASSA can verify your personal details and what province you’re in.

3. WHATSAPP

Note that you only have to apply for a SASSA SRD grant once – no matter the means – and your application will be registered on the system. Do not apply through multiple means. However, should you choose to, you can also WhatsApp 082 046 8553.

4. UPDATE YOUR APPLICATION

When you apply for a SASSA SRD grant, at some point you may need to update details on your application. This may be because important information is missing, or your situation has simply changed in the interim. You can do this by updating the SASSA screening questions HERE.

5. CHECK YOUR STATUS

6. LODGE AN APPEAL

If your SASSA SRD grant has be denied, you can lodge an appeal through the Department of Social Development (DSD) HERE.
