The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have announced an important change for 2024, which means that all social grant recipients will no longer be able to collect their cash grants at PostBank retailers.

According to the information available, social grants will no longer be paid out in cash from PostBank due to potential safety concerned.

The switch is designed to make it easier for recipients to collect their grants by phasing out the need for cash. Recipients are encouraged to receive their social grant funds into their bank accounts instead.

Here’s what you should know about SASSA and the important change for 2024.

According to information from SASSA and Postbank, the social grant agency will no longer issue cash payments to recipients from 2024.

The change means that social grants should be paid into recipient bank accounts, or collected from other participating retailers.

This switch is an attempt to ease grant collection for South Africa’s social grant recipients. It also attempts to reduce cash-handling, to reduce potential risk for customers and staff.

SASSA and Postbank

The South African Social Security Agency will still issue social grants via Postbank, though social grants will no longer be handled in cash.

Earlier this year, the social grant agency’s contract with Postbank irked many social grant recipients. Due to a payment error, thousands of recipients couldn’t collect their grant on the stated date.

If you receive your social grant, it’s important to note this Postbank change.

For 2024, it could be much more convenient to have your grant paid into your account.

Some participating retailers will still deal with social grants, including Spar, PnP, and Boxer Stores. If you aren’t sure whether your retailer can dispense SASSA grants, call or ask the agency about national retailers and linked systems.
