Here’s everything you need to know about the new South African smart ID card, before you wander into a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) branch and waste your time.

Whether you’re tired of the ‘green mamba’ or had you ID stolen, you can now apply online for a South African smart ID card. Here’s what to do and how much it’ll cost you …
Introduced by the DHA back in 2013, the South African smart ID card effectively replaces our beloved ‘green mamba’ ID booklet. Your booklet is still valid till the DHA gets its act together, don’t worry. But any new applicants automatically get the latest South African smart ID card.

You must be 16 years of age or older and be a South African citizen to apply for a South African smart ID card. Show your old green ID booklet (if you have one), driver’s licence and or passport as proof of identification. If you were born elsewhere, a government-issue identification card or passport from the country of your birth will also be accepted as ID.
When applying for a South African smart ID card, you must submit the following documents (if you have them). This is so old identify documents cannot be cloned nefariously:
