‘R20 IS FOR BANK CHARGES’: R350 GRANT TO INCREASE, SANS REACT

In the National Assembly on Wednesday, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is said to have announced that the R350 grant will rise to R370 on April Fool’s Day.

“His Excellency, the President, in his State of the Nation Address, said that the [SRD grant] is going to continue, and the R350 will be improved,” Godongwana was quoted as saying.

The government of South Africa introduced the R350 grant in May 2020, the Department of Social Development reported. This came as the COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented social and economic challenges.

“I am pleased to say that we have found consensus that in between, subject to the finalisation of the comprehensive social security [programme], we’ll increase the R350 to R370 by the 1st of April this year. That is part of the progressive realisation of the basic rights of our people,” the Minister was quoted as saying.

A number of South Africans on social media have since left their thoughts and opinions regarding the recent announcement.
