Leap day February 2024 falls on Thursday the 29th this year. And according to outdated beliefs, that’s the day – and only day – women ‘have the right’ to propose. Leap years come along once every four years (or so) and with it comes a few strange superstitions, too.

Without a doubt, the strangest and most antiquated of the lot is leap day February 2024 being the day women ‘have the right’ to propose. Of course, this one harks back to ancient, colonial England, confirms Historic.com.

Moreover, leap day February 2024 has no recognition in English law – as in it is being ‘leapt over’ and ignored. Sadly, this is also why Thursday 29 February is the one day women ‘have the right’ to propose. Women were only allowed to ‘take advantage’ of the anomaly and propose because the day was not recognised in ancient England.

Nevertheless, if you find this sort of superstition charming and are considering proposing, there are a few more things to remember. Women were encouraged to wear a red petticoat underneath their dress. It’s believed this will guarantee the man saying yes to the proposal. In Ireland and Scotland, men are even fined for not saying yes to a proposal on the day. A day which has also become known as ‘Bachelor’s Day’ in places.

GOOD LUCK
