GAUTENG: NEW NUMBER PLATE SYSTEM

@DKNMOHAMMED took to X on Sunday, 18 February to share a photo of how Gauteng’s new number plates could possibly look like.

The Citizen reports that Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed that Gauteng motorists are legally required to get the new number plates. Motorists will have to get new number plates when they renew their licence discs.

Lesufi added that the new number plates will be fitted with a QR code and will be “tamper-proof” as criminals won’t be able to remove them.

“From 1 April in Gauteng, we are revamping the car registration numbers of all the cars. We are starting afresh, all of us. Every person that has a car must re-register and get a new registration number that can’t be copied, can’t be removed and is reliable,” he said.

SOUTH AFRICANS SLAM LATEST NUMBER PLATES

@hambezisho: “The government of @CyrilRamaphosa is always looking for ways of milking money from ordinary people by all means.”

@mageba4uv: “How can they remove the good number plates for this nonsense.”

@Bl3ssed45: “These numbers will be full in no time. This is a waste of money and a taste of patience on us. Lesufi has better things to do than this nonsense.”

@Agon510: “Will they be providing these number plates free of charge?! I smell another fantastic opportunity for a little bit of ‘skimming the top'” And by that, I mean skimming the top 60 to 70%.”

@SanphuSA: “It’s concerning that the Gauteng provincial government has introduced a new, unattractive number plate design featuring a QR code. This QR code could potentially link to sensitive information about motorists, raising privacy and security issues. It’s important for the government to prioritize the protection of individuals’ data and ensure that any use of QR codes on number plates is transparent and secure.”
