Sibling kittens of different genders will mate if kept together and intact because their natural instinct to reproduce outweighs any instinct not to mate with siblings.

Sibling cats are likely to carry similar genetic abnormalities, and when they reproduce, these abnormalities can manifest in their offspring, potentially leading to health issues or even the death of the kittens.

Keeping sibling cats from mating

Separating the sibling cats is essential to prevent them from mating.

This can be achieved by quarantining males or the female cat to prevent contact with the other cats.

Female cats can get pregnant while in heat, and it may not always be obvious when they are in heat.

Temporary quarantining may not be a long-term solution.

Long-term separation can be achieved by sending the sibling kittens to different new homes.

It’s advisable to keep either all the males or all the females and find new homes for the other kittens before they reach 3 months of age to avoid mating.
