Nowadays, there is a wide variety of bird pets that people can choose from.

However, this does raise the question: Are birds good company?

The answer to this is quite complex, but indeed, birds can occasionally make wonderful pets. So what are your options?

Here are 3 groups of pet birds to choose from.

1. Falcons

This is probably not the pet for you if you get easily attached to animals – or anything really? Here’s why.

Owning birds from the Falcon family starts with the process called Falconry.

This involves the capturing of the wild bird, and making them comfortable in a domestic setting.

The bird is then trained to hunt, which can be pretty fun for a sportsman.

This kind of bird ownership is ‘different’, not what you would typically consider a traditional pet situation.

After a few years, many of these birds are then returned to the wild.

2. Flocks

In case you’re not much of a sportsman, we have something else.

Think chickens, ducks, peacocks, or geese.

So what if they’re not “technically pets” – neither is a snake, but we have those!

These animals offer both fun companionship and benefits when cared for. 2 birds, one stone. Literally.

If you have a sizable flock, of say chickens, you may even earn a living by selling eggs. The chickens would be technically paying rent! The ideal roommate situation.

However, it’s important to put in safety precautions to protect them from predators like cats, dogs, and wild birds.

3. Domesticated birds

You won’t throw a rock far enough before hitting a pet shop offering a variety of birds for sale

There are tons of options from, lovebirds, cockatoos, and parakeets. Your choice will solely depend on the type of companionship you want.

It’s important to keep in mind that these birds need special care to maintain their health.

They are tropical creatures with very specific environmental, dietary, and even emotional needs.

Some parrots, for example, can’t be left alone for long periods of time – they need a companion.
