No meat March: how to ease into a meatless diet this month

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are interested in the health advantages of plant-based foods, and in this month of March, we emphasise how you can ease into a meatless diet.

Choose meatless meals that you enjoy

Reviewing your current diet is a smart first step. Make a note of the foods you typically consume, paying close attention to any vegetarian or plant-based items you enjoy.

Next, try to include these foods in your diet together with a range of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans.

For instance, adding veggies to recipes that you already like, like pasta or rice, is a smart way to include them in your diet. When transitioning to a vegan diet and giving up all animal-based foods, search for dairy alternatives such as calcium-fortified soy milk and yoghurt.

Spice up vegetables the same way you would with meat

Vegetarian cookery can use the same herbs, spices, and rubs that you would typically use for meat.

Do you enjoy a tasty lamb fry? Bring those flavours into filled sweet potatoes with curry chickpeas or spiced eggs with tzatziki. How about chicken, do you like it? Put that flavour mixture in a collard green wrap or a creamy potato salad.

Discover new ingredients and dishes from various cultures

Trying new recipes is the best way to step outside of your meat comfort zone. Look online or in your local library for books; thanks to chefs and creative cooks, vegetarian dinners are now far more exciting than they used to be.

What should you eat in this meatless month?

If you’ve never given up meat, you definitely have some questions about what you’ll eat, especially in terms of your sources of protein. You don’t need to worry, though, as plant meals are rich in protein and some of them even contain all nine essential amino acids.

Additionally, unlike animal proteins, plant proteins do not induce inflammation, which is to your benefit.


These contain food types such as beans, peas, Lentils and chickpeas, potatoes, rice, carrots, corn, and all your carbohydrate ingredients.

Healthy fats:

Avocado, coconut, chia seeds, nuts, and extra virgin olive oil.


Vitamins are an essential part of your meatless journey this month and they include all fruits and vegetable types.

Find fresh, in-season produce from your local farm or produce market, which is frequently considerably more affordable than the stuff found in a typical supermarket and is brimming with flavour and let your meatless journey be progressive.
