Last month, we reported on the havoc that has been caused due to the inadequate level of service at South African home affairs offices around the world.
Currently, there is a six- to twelve-month wait for critical documents such as passports and ID books. In the recent elections, numerous South Africans abroad were unable to vote due to the abnormally long wait for necessary documents.
The source of the problem is considered to be an understaffing issue, but despite three letters being sent to the SA High Commissioner to the UK, Nomatemba Tambo, not much has changed.
Mr J J McGluwa of the DA wrote a formal parliamentary question to the Minister of Home Affairs to ask if he is aware of the serious delays in the application for SA documentation and if so, what measures have been put in place to curb this.
His response included the following:
A petition has been drawn up that will be presented to the Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi and Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
