South African social media users have shared angry reactions to the amount of power outages the country has been subjected to over the last few weeks. Their anger has been amplified by the fact that there is a newly appointed Electricity Minister with a salary of around R2.4m a year and still no changes within struggling power giant Eskom. Earlier this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Kgosientsho Ramokgopa would be taking the position of the Electricity Minister.

At first, South Africans appeared optimistic about the new minister and the measures being taken to circumvent the energy crisis, and now they have expressed dismay at the lack of progress made by Minister Ramokgopa.

Minister Ramokgopa’s salary revisited as SA gets 12 hours of load shedding daily

During the cabinet reshuffle this year, Ramaphosa unveiled his new weapon against Eskom’s endless load shedding — an electricity minister in the form of Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.

The news was met with a mixture of enthusiasm and doubt from South Africans who are desperate for change but weary about new ideas.

While the first few weeks of his appointment yielded less load shedding and even no load shedding on some days, things have gone from bad to worse.

Off with his head?

Many households — and business establishments are experiencing up o 12 hours of power outages a day and morale is at an all time low.

Taking to Twitter, one app user opened a gateway for discussion on the matter by tweeting about how much the electricity minister is actually costing South Africans despite the stage 6 load shedding the country is experiencing.

“Eskom is embarrassed to admit that we’ve hit Stage 8 even AFTER Andre De Ruyter was fired and a Minister of Electricity was appointed. Nothing helped. It’s worse than ever,” wrote one Tweep.

Another added:

“Minister of Electricity must resign, he is earning a HUGE SALARY for doing nothing and telling us what we know, not to be true. MINISTER OF ELECTRICITY RESIGN.”
