As cost of living is on the rise, the amended SASSA social grants will be welcomed by Mzansi’s most vulnerable citizens. Although, sadly, the 4.8% increase is no longer keeping pace with inflation. South Africa has seen the price of essentials increase by more than 6% in 2024. Electricity, too, increased in April by 12.8%, and fuel has seen consecutive increases in 2024 already.

The first amended SASSA social grants were paid this month. These include R2 180 (over 60) and R2 200 (over 75) to old-age pensioners. Disability grant beneficiaries received R2 180, too. And, SASSA Childcare grants – including R2 180 for Child Dependency, R1 180 for Foster Care and R530 for Child Support – were also disbursed by the agency. As noted in the above SASSA release, some grants will enjoy a further increase in October 2024.

Likewise, SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants increase for the first time in history, to R370. This social welfare is dedicated to struggling South Africans who have zero means of income. You can click HERE to apply. The process is completed online only. SASSA SRD payments dates for this month (April 2024) will take place between Thursday April 25 and Monday April 29.

A reminder that for all other amended SASSA social grants you must be able to prove/show the following:

  • Proof of residence.
  • Your bar-coded identity document (ID).
  • Proof of your marital status (if applicable).
  • Documents proving your income and/or dividends.
  • Information regarding your assets, including the value of any property you own.
  • Proof of a private pension (if any).
  • Up-to-date three month’s bank statements.
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) membership book/discharge certificate (if applicable).
  • Copy of your spouse’s last will and final liquidation (if dead in the last five years).
  • If you are too old/sick to travel to a SASSA office, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf, provided they produce a letter from you/your doctor explaining your ailment.
