SA’s top performing public school matriculant Melissa Muller has shared her top tips to the class of 2024.

Melissa Muller – a Western Province learner who scooped South Africa’s top matric achiever accolade in National Senior Certificate exam results – has shared her top tips with the incoming class of 2024.

The former Rhenish Girls High School student – who will now study Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch – was honoured in an awards ceremony on Thursday, 18.

On Friday, matriculants woke up to the official release of their results.

MEET SA’S TOP NSC EXAM ACHIEVER

According to IOL, Melissa Muller was placed number 1 out of 717,377 matric learners who sat for the 2023 National Senior Certificate.

Muller’s placing was announced at a special breakfast event with the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, in Randburg.

“I’m shaking. I’m still in disbelief”, Melissa told the media.

“We are bursting with pride!” Rhenish Girls High School said of their star pupil in a social media post.

Here are Melissa Muller’s tips to flourishing in your matric year…

Enjoy every moment

Melissa had a well-rounded matric year, including being on the first team for hockey and water polo for her school. She also sat on the school learner council.

“I had to work from airports while we were travelling for sports tours, and I had to get up early in the morning.

Have a support system

“It will get overwhelming; have a support system, your family, and ask them for help when needed.

“My family were very supportive because I get very stressed out during exams, and my mom was always checking if I was okay and if I needed anything.”

Stay up to date with schoolwork

“It will help you identify problem areas early on, which will help you avoid the stress of cramming the night before exams.”

Discipline and time management skills

“It was a busy year…I managed to juggle sports and academics. And I still had a little bit of a social life
