New ‘Lord of the Rings’ films announced by Warner Bros

Twenty years later, with six movies that dominated the film circuit and 21 Oscars, we’re finally heading back to Middle Earth for the new Lord of the Rings television series.

According to NME, Amazon Studios are set to recreate J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings. The company reportedly signed a $250 rights contract back in November along with the author’s estate, publisher HarperCollins and New Line Cinema to produce a multi-season show for television.

When will The Lord of the Rings television series be released?

While there hasn’t been an official date set, “Amazon are required by the aforementioned $250m deal to begin production on the show within two years” which means we can probably expect the show to drop in 2019.

What is the budget for The Lord of the Rings television series?

Apparently, the Tolkien Estate and Trust, book publishers HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema – a division of Warner Bros. who was in turn responsible for the Oscar-winning movies – are set to allocate a reported $1 billion budget for the show – the biggest in television history.

Deadline has reported that Amazon paid close to $250 million, but that’s before factoring in any costs for development, talent and production.

The report estimates that “the budget for a fantasy series of that magnitude is likely to be $100 million-$150 million a season,” which, given that we’re looking at five seasons, would mean a total production cost for the Lord of the Rings series of up to $750 million or more.

How many seasons can we expect?

There will reportedly be five seasons of The Lord the Rings television series.

The Lord of the Rings television series cast:

So far, there’s been no official announcement regarding the cast, but actor Ian McKellen has expressed an interest in reprising the role of Gandalf in the new Lord Of The Rings series. And, Peter Jackson, best known as the director, writer, and producer of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, is reportedly in talks of becoming an executive producer on the show.

What is the plot for The Lord of the Rings television series?

According to Digital Spy, the new series is not a direct adaptation of Tolkien’s three books: The Fellowship of the RingThe Two Towers and The Return of the King.

The series is set to be a prequel which will explore new story lines preceding The Fellowship of the ring. But, it is still unclear if it’ll be set before The Hobbit, or between that and The Lord of the Rings making it a “mid-quel” of sorts.

Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, has confirmed that, while it might bear the Lord of the Rings title, Amazon’s project will “bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on JRR Tolkien’s original writings.”
