The basis behind Ipsos’ assertion that the ANC will tank in the 2024 elections goes like so. The company conducted 3 600 face-to-face interviews in South Africa from October 2023. And its findings are the ANC will tank in the 2024 elections, reports Business Tech.

The latest Ipsos poll posits a massive shake-up for South African politics in the 2024 national elections. It predicts the ANC will tank in the 2024 elections and receive less than 40% of the vote. The anchoring question of the Ipsos poll was: “Which political party would you vote for if there were elections tomorrow?”

The firm even went so far as to create an imitation ballot that respondents could complete. This way the votes were also confidential. While it says its findings do not necessarily constitute an election prediction, it does capture an all-important sentiment of what’s happening in the country.

Detailed analysis by Ipsos takes into account party choice, preference, or affiliation through other inquiries asked in the questionnaire. And the results/findings are as follows:

  • There’s a large decline in support for the ANC.
  • DA narrowly holds onto official opposition status.
  • EFF makes major strides to close the gap to DA.
  • Coalitions will be a necessity to form a government.
  • The Multi-party Charter for South Africa will draw 33% of the national vote.
  • The total number of eligible voters in 2024 is 27.4 million.

Furthermore, Ipsos notes 10.1% (one in every ten) of the registered electorate have not aligned themselves with a political party. The swing-vote of sorts, the election hinges on turnout on the day. A low turnout could be attributed to widespread despondency over the country’s situation and low levels of trust in politicians and political parties, said Ipsos.

Nevertheless, a low voter turnout (below 40%) of the 27.4 million will probably benefit the ANC. Such a scenario would likely see the ANC create coalitions with ‘smaller parties’ to breach the 50% majority threshold.
