Van Niekerk, who will look to defend his Olympic 400m title in Tokyo in a little under three weeks, took to social media on Monday to confirm the exciting news, -but didn’t reveal the gender of the baby.

He wrote at the time: “Crazy excited to announce we are having a baby!!! Blessings keep coming our way, stay tuned for the gender soon”.

No due date was given either.

However, on Thursday, Wayde van Niekerk once again took to social media – on what was his 29th birthday – to confirm he and wife Chesney are expecting a SON!

Van Niekerk married Chesney Campbell in October 2017.

Wayde van Niekerk, who is a cousin of Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe, memorably won the 400m at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics running out of Lane 8 in a time of 43.03.

Five years later that time is still the world’s fastest for one lap of the track.

The first round heats of the men’s 400m in Japan are scheduled for 1 August with the final set for 5 August at 14:00 SA time.
